Nicolas Venette - La génération de l'homme

Rare two-volume illustrated edition of this work, belonging to the medical, physiological, and moral literature of the 18th century, which seeks to explain human reproduction while placing it within the social and conjugal framework of its time - The work focuses on the generation of the human being, the union of the sexes, conception and the various conditions considered necessary for procreation, but its ambition goes beyond mere anatomical description since Venette constantly associates medical knowledge with moral, conjugal, and social considerations - Physician and author of works devoted to human sexuality, Venette seeks to make accessible knowledge that, in the 18th century, remained surrounded by many traditional representations, taboos, and beliefs - The title immediately reveals this double orientation, since the generation of man is studied in parallel with “conjugal love,” which allows the author to present sexuality as a natural function while placing it back within the institution of marriage - Nicolas Venette - La génération de l'Homme ou tableau de l'amour conjugal considéré dans l'état du mariage - 1751 - Tome I et II - A Londres - 472 - 420 pages - Good condition of bindings, volumes in their full original brown morocco, wear from handling, some minor defects on covers and spine (the spines are damaged including that of the first volume which shows a crack), headcaps damaged, title of the first volume erased, hinges split, corners worn, red edges, spine with raised bands, gilded titling and numbering - Good interior condition, browning (more pronounced on certain leaves), small vignette on the title page, pretty headbands, beautiful drop cap, volumes enriched with numerous folding plates engraved in black, fly leaves marbled in reasonable condition, good copy - Delivery service guaranteed within a few days –
