Night Rain at Karasaki - Uit de serie "Eight Views of Omi...

Original woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Night Rain at Karasaki - From the series "Eight Views of Omi" - 1891 Memorial Edition The woodblock print comes from the series "eight views of Omi Province (Hak’kei)" A Hak'kei consists of an image of 1) snow, 2) evening rain, 3) autumn moon, 4) bell for evening prayers, 5) sailboats returning in the evening, 6) migrating geese, 7) sunset, 8) clearing after rain. A good artist had to be able to depict all eight images Of the many places these Hak’keis were applied, the "Omi" series is one of the best known and it was a popular subject for woodblock print artists. Hiroshige has many "Omi" series to his name; most have a horizontal format. The series (first edition from 1857) from which the offered print comes has an unusually vertical format, with the landscape at the bottom and clouds decorated at the top with confetti-like shapes. This print was published in 1891 by Kodama Matashichi (active 1881 - 1894) and is printed with the original, partially revised (the date / inscriptions in the margins have been added) woodblocks (1857). The print is part of a memorial edition of the series "Eight Views of Omi Province". Many of the woodblocks from the earlier editions are now extremely rare. This memorial series offers a chance to obtain an original woodblock print, of these classic Hiroshige designs. Prints from this memorial series are also rare What makes this later "Memorial" edition print recognizably different from earlier prints is the presence of extensive text in both the right and left margins. Also characteristic is the use of somewhat brighter colors, which were popular in the mid-Meiji period The Waseda University Theatre Museum has the print from this Memorial edition in its collection, see https://ukiyo-e.org/image/waseda/201-1303 Impression: softly executed "bokashi shading", detailed "carving" and "printing", a great deal of attention to detail. Sizes (margins not included): 22 x 34 cm Overall size: 24 x 36 cm Good condition, aided in part by the print having been kept in an album for a long time. Fresh colors. The print has retained its original album backing. See the photos for details Ships in sturdy packaging
