Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 21 x 16 cm. The composition presents a group of figures immersed in a nocturnal atmosphere, where the darkness is dimly illuminated by a warm light emanating from a lantern held by one of the figures. The grotesque expressions and somber chromaticism, dominated by blues, grays, and reds, accentuate the mysterious and fantastical atmosphere. The rapid, nervous brushwork reveals the expressive nature of the work, close to dark romanticism and the Goyaesque aesthetic of the mid-19th century. Lucas manages to convey the tension between the real and the imaginary through a direct, gestural pictorial language, where matter itself becomes a symbol of the irrational and the dreamlike, reflecting the nineteenth-century fascination with themes of superstition and nocturnality.
