Ninni Pagano (1969) - L' illusione del guardare

Biography of Ninni Pagano Born in Catania in 1969, Ninni Pagano initially pursued scientific studies, a background that will influence the precision and structure of his future works. His entry into the world of art came through studying with master Antonio Sciacca, with whom he shares a vision of art as a bridge between different eras. The Poetics: "The Cabinet of Wonders" Pagano's search is closely tied to the concept of Wunderkammer (Cabinet of Wonders). His works are often conceived as mental spaces where they fuse: Classicism and Pop: Elements of Greek and Renaissance statuary are reinterpreted with compact colors and contemporary symbolisms. Alchemy and Philosophy: The artist investigates the enigma of existence through dreamlike figures (such as his famous "Swan Women") and hermetic references. Matter: He uses mixed powders to achieve a chromatic compactness that gives the canvases a quasi-sculptural dimension. Milestones and Recognitions Although his exhibition career took off fully around 2011, he quickly achieved international recognition: Biennale di Venezia: Exhibited at the 56th edition (2015) within the show "Grazie Italia" at the Guatemala Pavilion. Triennale di Roma: Participation in the Visual Arts Triennial Exhibition in 2014. Publications: His work is included in Mondadori's Catalogo d'Arte Moderna (CAM) and in the Atlas of Contemporary Art by De Agostini. International Presence: His works have been shown in prestigious venues such as the Altes Dampfbad Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany, and at Art Market in Budapest. In addition to painting and sculpture, Pagano is an expert connoisseur of antiquarian art. This passion is reflected in the way he "recovers" the past, not to copy it, but to transform it into a grotesque and fascinating language that speaks of the contradictions of modern man. The Illusion of Looking "The Illusion of Looking" represents a work steeped in surrealism and symbolism, focused on the complex relationship between objective vision and inner perception. Through a highly figurative painting technique, the artist constructs a true visual meta-narration on the meaning of looking. Critical Analysis and Narrative of the Work The Central Symbol (The Eye-Sphere): At the center of the composition rises a large sphere bearing the iris of a human eye, resting on an elaborate bronze pedestal (evoking both the cup of a classical column and the base of a crystal ball in a Wunderkammer). The eye is not merely an organ that receives, but a rigid, reflective container: it represents rational perception trying to imprison reality within a rigid and catalogable structure. The Animal Presence (The Iguana/Lizard): Climbing above the sphere, an iguana (or lizard) encircles the eye with its body and long serpentine tail. This reptile—symbol of primal instinct, adaptation, and peripheral vision detached from human overstructures—"guards" and at the same time "overshadows" the human gaze. With its paws firmly on the cornea, the animal suggests that instinct and uncontrollable nature always overwhelm the human claim to understand everything through sight alone. Chromatism and Contrast: The chromatic contrast heightens the suspended, theatrical atmosphere: The earth-toned sienna/rust background: creates an atemporal, almost metaphysical dimension, devoid of defined spatial coordinates. The cold blue of the iris: immediately draws the visual vanishing point, placing the viewer at the center of a mirror game (as we look at the work, the work looks back at us). The green of the reptile's skin: introduces a vivid, organic note to an apparently crystallized structure. Key Concept: > The work suggests that what we define as "reality" is a deception of sight: we believe we observe the world with rational detachment (the crystal eye), but we are constantly conditioned and guided by our primal instincts and by nature (the reptile), making the act of looking itself a profound illusion.
