Ninni Pagano (1969) - L' incastro della luce

Biography of Ninni Pagano Born in Catania in 1969, Ninni Pagano initially pursues scientific studies, a background that will influence the precision and structure of his future works. His entry into the art world comes through attending the studio of maestro Antonio Sciacca, with whom he shares a vision of art as a bridge between different eras. The Poetics: “The Cabinet of Curiosities” Pagano’s research is closely tied to the concept of Wunderkammer (Cabinet of Curiosities). His works are often conceived as mental spaces where elements converge: Classicism and Pop: Elements of Greek and Renaissance sculpture are reinterpreted with solid colors and contemporary symbolism. Alchemy and Philosophy: The artist probes the enigma of existence through dreamlike figures (such as his famous “Swan Women”) and Hermetic references. Matter: He uses mixed powders to achieve a chromatic compactness that gives the canvases an almost sculptural dimension. Achievements and Recognitions Although his exhibition career truly took off around 2011, he quickly reached internationally significant milestones: Venice Biennale: He exhibited at the 56th edition (2015) within the show “Grazie Italia” at the Guatemala Pavilion. Rome Triennale: Participation in the Visual Arts Triennale Exhibition in 2014. Publications: His work is included in the Mondadori Modern Art Catalog (CAM) and in the De Agostini Atlas of Contemporary Art. International Presence: His works have been shown at prestigious venues such as the Altes Dampfbad Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany, and at Art Market in Budapest. In addition to being a painter and sculptor, Pagano is an expert connoisseur of antique art. This passion is reflected in the way he “rescues” the past—not to copy it, but to transform it into a grotesque and fascinating language that speaks of the contradictions of modern man. L’incastro della luce (The Locking of Light) This work appears as a refined synthesis of psychological introspection and plastic rigor, in which the title “The Locking of Light” finds immediate justification in the millimeter-perfect relationship between the shadowed surfaces and the light bands. The image is dominated by a stark, theatrical chiaroscuro, of clear Caravaggesque and Flemish extraction, emerging from a black background with no spatial coordinates: The composition and the light: The light does not merely illuminate the subject, but sculptes its anatomy. It settles decisively along the neck profile, highlights the clavicles, and lights the profile face, creating visual tension between the rigidity of the background and the softness of the flesh. The chromatic play: The intense saturated red of the cap acts as the chromatic pivot of the work, breaking the coldness of the dark tones of the garment and directly dialoguing with the vivid lipstick of the figure. Iconographic detail: The pearl in the necklace and the earring function as true “points of light,” recalling classical tradition (as in Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring) but reinterpreted with an exquisitely contemporary aesthetic sensibility. Narrative dimension: The reclining posture, the gaze cast downward, and the absence of direct eye contact with the viewer evoke a state of suspension and intimate contemplation, rendering the figure enigmatic and distant in preservation of her “I.” The work demonstrates excellent formal control, capable of transforming a simple profile portrait into a meditation on silence, on form, and on how light defines “matter.” Instagram:@ninnipagano
