A silver chain used to hold up the skirt, also known as a saute-ruisseau, composed of a chatelaine-style brooch at the top with Japanese-style floral decoration and a large Gothic-style chain, formed by three parts joined by rings. It belonged to the ancient branch of the Deval family, an old French bourgeois family from Angoulême, lords of Touvre and La Lèche (Touvre), with a branch established in Aurillac, Auvergne. A “saute-ruisseau” is a brooch on a long chain that women wore at the waist of the skirt or dress, which allowed them to lift the skirt and the underskirt to avoid damage or soilage when crossing the street. In addition to keeping the skirts clean, ladies also wore it when riding horseback, climbing stairs, dancing, or practicing the fashion sport: cycling. In French, it can also be poetically called “Suivez-moi jeune homme” (Follow me, young man), since lifting the skirt could be a risky invitation in those times... But this name, “Suivez-moi jeune homme,” is actually used for long hat ribbons. MATERIAL Silver ORIGIN France, around 1870 DIMENSIONS Width: 2.5 cm Length: 88.5 cm
