PIPA DE BREZO LES WOOD. PLATA LEY 925. A superb and highly sought-after collection piece for pipe enthusiasts is up for auction. It is a pipe from the Ferndown brand, entirely hand-made in England by master craftsman Les Wood. Les Wood. He is a legendary English craftsman who originally worked for the prestigious Dunhill house (as a silversmith and finish expert) before founding his own brand, Ferndown, together with his wife Dolly. Breccia Markings/Shaving: At the bottom of the shank you can clearly read: FERNDOWN BARK HAND MADE IN ENGLAND LES WOOD Shape: Rhodesian (or Bulldog rounded), characterized by the bowl with a double groove/line carved horizontally around the upper part and the neck/shank squared or faceted. Finish: Bark / Rustic (high-texture, rough finish in a dark/black tone, very characteristic of Les Wood pieces). Mount: Sterling Silver Spigot (a system in which both the neck and the mouthpiece are reinforced with solid silver sleeves). “Bark” Finish (Cortex): This is what Les Wood calls his rustic finish. It features a deep, dark, highly textured relief that emulates tree bark. It provides excellent grip and dissipates heat well when smoking. Smooth/Rustic Contrast: The beauty of this piece is that it combines the dark rustic finish with a smooth, faceted (paneled) finish on the top of the bowl and the shank. This allows the natural grain and the contrasting high-quality briar color to be appreciated. Quality Details and Materials (The Les Wood Seal) The Silver Band: It has a sterling silver bead/ band. Les Wood is famous precisely for the perfect fit of his silverwork. The band shows the contrasts: 925: Certifies the purity of the sterling silver. L&JS: Les Wood’s official silversmith mark (Les & Joanna Storrie / Les Wood). The mouthpiece is traditionally made of high-quality black vulcanite/ebonite, a material derived from vulcanized rubber ideal for pipes as it is soft to the touch and comfortable to bite. Conspicuous mark: It includes on the side the initials LJS stamped in gold, the workshop’s guarantee mark of the artisan Les Wood (L. & J.S. Briars). Grade and Rarity Two Stars (**): Under the word “Bark” are two stars engraved. In Ferndown’s grading system, the stars indicate the pipe size (one star being the smallest and three or more for extra-large pieces). A two-star size is very balanced, ideal for a standard smoke and very comfortable in hand. This is a high-end pipe, from an extremely respected craftsman due to his attention to detail, airflow engineering, and mastery of silver. Les Wood pipes are highly coveted by pipe smokers. They are no longer made, as the craftsman has retired. It is nearly impossible to find a Les Wood pipe in this pristine condition. It was used only once and has been stored until now. It is in immaculate aesthetic condition. The pipe measures 17 cm in length and weighs 70 g. Inner chamber diameter 22 mm. Maximum bowl diameter 56.7 mm. Bowl height 41.2 mm. Inner chamber depth 35 mm. The pipe has been cleaned and sterilized. The inside of the shank was cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. The bowl interior has been cleaned with nikosolvol, although there was no carbon buildup, it was completely clean since it was only used for a few minutes, on a single display occasion. The exterior of the bowl has been polished with colorless beeswax cream. In short, the pipe is new to use. One of a kind in the world.
