ORWAY. 1/4 Speciedaler, 1685. Christiania Mint. Christian V. NGC MS-62. KM-Unlisted; Hede-Unlisted; Sieg-85; NMD-32; Delzanno-33; Galster-229; JS-369; Bruun-15365. Mintmaster: Peter Grüner, the Younger. Delicately toned, highly lustrous and truly exceptional early strike completely unmarred by the usual die cracks. Very rare. This interesting medallic issue minted to the weight of 1/4 Speciedaler was struck for the Norwegian Governor-general, the illegitimate son of Frederik III, Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, and bears his initials on the reverse. It marks King Christian V's historic journey to Norway. The Latin inscription on the reverse, "Terra Mariq", translates to "by land and by sea", symbolizing the monarch's absolute power and physical presence across all terrains. This motto perfectly mirrored the arduous royal expedition, which lasted exactly 47 days, spanning from May 29 to July 15, 1685. Estimate: €6,000 - €8,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Buyers which are non-VAT registered entities or individuals who take delivery of lots within EU countries subject to margin scheme taxation will be invoiced a VAT charge and a Buyer’s Premium for a total of 27.5% based upon the total amount of the hammer.
