NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1694. Kongsberg Mint. Christian V. NGC AU-55.

Handsome Speciedaler with an Edge Lettering of Extreme Rarity. NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1694. Kongsberg Mint. Christian V. NGC AU-55. Dav-3661; KM-194; Hede-39D; Sieg-61.4; NMD-176D; Delzanno-162d; Schou-21; Bruun-10433. Weight: 28.86 gms. Mintmaster: Henning Christopher Meyer, the Elder (HCM). Engraver: Caspar Barth. The edge bears the following very rare lettering: I DETTE ANSIGT DANNEMARK OG NORGE SKUER SIN MONARK ("In this visage, Denmark and Norway behold their monarch"). Nicely toned and retaining a considerable amount of original luster. As usual. Bech has marked the coin as a rarity by marking it with ink in the obverse left field. Although this Danish edge inscription is found on speciedalers throughout the entire 1692-1696 period, it must unconditionally be considered among the rarest, as it is unrecorded on specimens in private ownership outside the L. E. Bruun Collection. In addition to the present piece, the year in question is only known from two examples, held in the National Museum of Denmark and the Oslo University Coin Collection, respectively. Estimate: €14,000 - €18,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Frederik Chr. Bech Collection (Copenhagen - 1906) Lot # 826. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT.
