Nude Man Seated on the Ground with One Leg Extended Rembrandt Harmensz.

A fine, rich and dark impression of New Hollstein’s second state (of three), printing with light plate tone, with inky plate edges and the fine vertical wiping scratches, particularly beneath the man and his leg, characteristic of early impressions. With small margins. Rembrandt probably had more apprentices than any other Dutch painter of the 17th century. In his 'Groote Schouburgh', Arnold Houbraken describes an attic on Amsterdam’s Bloemgracht that Rembrandt rented for his pupils to draw and paint from life. Drawings from Rembrandt’s circle in the Albertina, Vienna, suggest that the master himself also participated in these studies of the nude. In 1646, three etchings, including the present seated male nude, were produced after the same model. – In good condition. | 1606 Leiden - Amsterdam 1669 | 15.-18. Jahrhundert | Druckgrafik | Nummer: 26x1699 | Provenance: William Esdaile (1758–1837), London, with his handwritten collector’s mark verso (Lugt 2617).
