NYAKUL DAWSON, Untitled, 2002

NYAKUL DAWSON Pitjantjatjara language, c.1935 - 2007 Untitled, 2002 acrylic on canvas 156 x 178 cm bears inscription verso: IRRND02308, Nyakul Dawson, Irrunytju, 2002 PROVENANCE Irrunytju Arts Centre, Western Australia, Cat No. IRRND02308 Warburton Arts Project at Tjulyuru Regional Arts Gallery, Western Australia, Cat No. C18 The Collection of Barbara Hansen, Victoria Accompanied by the documentation from Tjulyuru Regional Arts Gallery EXHIBITED Nampa Kuwarringkatja: New Work from the Ngaanyatjarra Artists, 23 September 2003, Tjulyuru Regional Arts Gallery, Western Australia Born in the late 1930s at Aaran, on the dreaming track of Wati Ngirntaka (Goanna Man) in the Western Desert, Nyakul Dawson's early life was shaped by the encroaching presence of the Warburton mission, where he was taken to school and where his parents traded dingo skins for food before walking back to Irrunytju. He is recognised as a senior law man and serves as Ngankari, a traditional healer, for the Irrunytju community. This standing informs the authority with which Dawson handles the country depicted here, the painting's structure of site and pathway anchored in the same ancestral geography that shaped his own upbringing. The painting's striking colour contrasts work interpretively rather than decoratively; the chains of white and red ringed roundels set against the surrounding fields of olive and yellow to mark out the significant sites threaded through this stretch of country act as an assertion of custodianship over this geography as its iconography. © NYAKUL DAWSON / Copyright Agency, 2026
