Oliver Goldsmith (1728 /1774) - James Hope Stewart (1789 /1856) - Lot

Lot of 15 engravings, of which 3 are in color and 12 black and white. Type: etching; Support: heavy paper, contemporaneous coloration: Condition: excellent inking, good conservation with slight traces of foxing and browning, all as shown in the photos; Shipping: insured via Bartolini/DPD courier, report any damage at pickup; Provenance: from a private collection; Artist/drawing: (James Hope Stewart): He is the Scottish naturalist painter (1789–1856), author of the original preparatory drawings. Stewart produced the plates from life or based on samples from the scientific museums of the era, working closely with Bishop for the final printed rendering. Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774) was one of the most celebrated and versatile Irish writers, poets, and essayists of the 18th century. Although today he is remembered mainly in the literary world for the novel The Vicar of Wakefield and for the theatrical comedy The Play She Humiliates Herself to Win, his work with the greatest commercial success was precisely the encyclopedia "A History of the Earth, and Animated Nature". Engraver: (J. Bishop): He was a skilled British engraver and etcher active in the 19th century. He worked extensively for the publishing house Blackie & Son, specializing in translating onto metal plates the detailed naturalist drawings, imprinting that extremely fine texture typical of bird feathers and reptile scales that can be seen in the prints. Joseph Brown, a celebrated and esteemed British engraver active in London during the 19th century.
