Oliver Wolcott 1779 Signed Payment Order

Revolutionary War-era handwritten payment order dated May 14, 1779, at Hartford, Connecticut, signed by Oliver Wolcott, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and William Pitkin. The document directs John Lawrence, Treasurer of the State of Connecticut, to pay Elijah Abel, Sheriff of Fairfield County, GBP 48 in lawful money for attending the General Assembly and distributing laws and proclamations. Wolcott was a Connecticut statesman, Revolutionary War officer and later Governor of Connecticut. The order provides an interesting record of state government expenditures during the American Revolution, with a particularly bold Wolcott signature. The document exhibits original folds, light toning and scattered staining. Presented with an engraved portrait of Wolcott. Document measures approximately 8 x 5 inches, framed to 18.5 x 11 inches. Not examined out of frame. Estimate $300 - $500
