Oronce Fine after Johannes de Sacrobosco and Ptolemy - De...

1553 RARE FIRST EDITION of the "De Mundi Sphaera or The Sphere of the World" ON ASTRONOMY, GEOGRAPHY, ASTROLOGY, MATHEMATICS, GEOMETRY, PLANET ORBITS, WEATHER, GEOMETRY by Oronce Finè (1494–1555), a mathematician and cartographer. Here the scientist Oronce Finè comments on and expands on his previous works and those of other authors such as Johannes de Sacrobosco and the theories and cosmography of Ptolemy, providing 16 essential astronomical tables or canons for calculations, all in two books. The book is richly illustrated (from Finè himself) with 27 woodcuts, and many practical diagrams, comparison tables of planets, orbits and distances. Oronce Fine's "Sphaera Treatise" was specifically composed to make astronomical principles and practices available to merchants, sailors and students. In the first photo, the big map summarizes a "Geocentric Cosmos With Nesting Spheres," with the Earth at the center, surrounded by a first circle of air and atmosphere and a second of fire. Then there are the rotating and numbered planets: 1 Moon, 2 Mercury, 3 Venus, 4 Sun, 5 Mars, 6 Jupiter, 7 Saturn, and then the eighth band with stars and zodiac. At that time, astronomy and astrology were in the same field. Antique binding in very good condition, as shown in the photos. NO COPIES FOR SALE, COMPLETE FIRST EDITION. Oronce Finè was professor of mathematics at the University of Paris and takes the concepts of the famous work "De Sphaera Mundi" by Johannes de Sacrobosco or John of Holywood (c. 1195-1256) and the Ptolemaic astronomy; analyzes it, expands it, and adds important new features and calculations for mapping the universe, establishing a correspondence between the systems of longitudinal and latitudinal positioning of celestial objects and terrestrial places. In addition to correcting the mistakes of previous authors, the book covers eclipses, climate zones, solar apogee, the calculation of meridians, longitudes, latitudes, sizes of the planets and their distances from the Earth, future positions and orbits, principles of geometry, calculus, trigonometry...etc. The book is richly illustrated with several ornate capital letters, tables and 27 woodcut diagrams in the text. Finè's teaching of Sacrobosco's theory of the sphere was an important part of the mathematics curriculum of university arts faculties since the late Middle Ages, as it served to introduce students to astronomy, astrology for the medical art, and to the reading of Aristotle's De Caelo (384-322 BC), offering them a general description of the structure of the cosmos and the motions of the stars, as well as the geometric tools necessary to understand them. Meanwhile, teaching of Ptolemy's Almagest, as well as the more in-depth study of planetary motions provided by the medieval Theorica and later by Peurbach's new Theorica, were taught only at a later stage in the mathematics curriculum. Finè remained a royal lecturer until his death in 1555, and his cosmography rivaled Sacrobosco and Apianus in both authority and popularity. AUTHOR: Oronce Fine or Finé (1494–1555) was a French mathematician, cartographer, editor and book illustrator. He was educated in Paris and obtained a degree in medicine in 1522 and grew up in an academic household, and his parents' contribution to the sciences was notable in France at the time. He was the first mathematics teacher to be a royal lecturer, and popularized mathematical teaching all over France. He was tasked with making math more transparent and to reform the curriculum that was being taught in France at the time. Fine published an illustrated astronomy manual, De Mundi Sphaera. The text included guides to the use of astronomical instruments and methods, such as the ancient practice of determining longitude by coordinated observation of lunar eclipses from two fixed points, distant enough that the phenomena would appear at different times of the night. He also described more recent innovations, such as an instrument he called the metaroscope; an astrolabe modified with the addition of a compass. The lunar crater Orontius and Finaeus Cove in Antarctica are named after Oronce Fine, using his Latinized name.
