Oswaldo Ruiz is a photographer whose practice engages anthropological and conceptual questions of landscape and territory through photography and video. After early architectural training and postgraduate studies in psychoanalysis, philosophy, and art history, he completed an MFA at Central Saint Martins College in London. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in public and private collections worldwide. He has received honors including the Acquisition Prize at the XVIII Biennial of Photography at Centro de la Imagen and selection for Mexico’s National System of Art Creators. Created during Ruiz’s 2024 residency at the McColl Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, Talking Fields draws upon ancient petroglyphs associated with Cherokee ancestors in Western North Carolina, extending the artist’s earlier research into rock carvings in Mexico and Chile. Ruiz approaches petroglyphs and photography as parallel technologies for recording and interpreting the world across different historical periods. Using illuminated symbols he calls “light glyphs,” he inscribes the landscape with ephemeral forms that function as contemporary counterparts to ancient markings. The resulting photographs explore relationships among language, place, and memory, considering how acts of inscription can mark both physical space and the passage of time. Excellent condition; not examined out of frames.
