Ca. AD 1800 - 1900 A striking Ottoman khanjar with a deeply carved hilt of blue sapphire glass, imitating the prized hardstones favored in the court workshops of the late Ottoman Empire. The grip and pommel are executed in a faceted architectural form, showing stepped carving and columnar details. The guard is shaped in classic Ottoman style with flaring terminals. The curved steel blade displays a visible wootz pattern and is decorated at the forte with finely executed gold koftgari work of scrolling vegetal motifs. The blade features a central fuller and secondary shallow panels that emphasize the weapon's curvature. Size: 41.3mm Provenance: Private London collection; US art market, before 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
