All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Our Lady of Mount Carmel with donors, Colonial School of New Granada

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions 62 x 45 cm. The Virgin of Carmen appears enthroned on clouds, holding the Child Jesus and offering the scapular as a symbol of spiritual protection. On either side are two figures in prayer, possibly Carmelite saints or donors associated with the order’s devotion. Below the Marian figure are cherub heads that reinforce the celestial character of the scene. The composition adopts an ascending structure that leads the viewer’s gaze toward the glorious apparition of the Virgin. The work stands out for its narrative simplicity, the symbolic use of religious attributes, and the devotional efficacy of the image. The formal language and iconography follow models widely disseminated in colonial Baroque painting during the 18th century, intended to foster Marian veneration and popular spirituality. Dimensions 62 x 45 cm. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
