Beach Haven, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, 1878. 1 Share I/U Stock Certificate, Black print with simple black border and company title at top center, Fine to VF condition with water stains at top. Early Ferry company. Salem Rope or Wire Ferry Co., chartered in 1878 in Pennsylvania, operated a cable-guided rope or wire ferry, a common and economical means of crossing rivers before the era of widespread bridge-building. Such ferries used cables anchored on both banks to guide flat-bottomed boats carrying passengers, wagons, and livestock across the water, replacing slower, oar-powered crossings. Modest local enterprises like this one served small river communities well into the late 19th century, until railroads, bridges, and improved roads gradually rendered them obsolete.
