"Jeu sur la Plage" was created by Picasso at the time he was working on the etchings for the famous Suite Vollard series, which consisted of 100 different etchings completed in 1939. Though it was not intended for the Suite Vollard series, it shares stylistic similarities with other etchings in the suite. The plate for "Jeu sur la Plage" was engraved by Picasso on March 7, 1933, but remained unprinted for decades thereafter. It was first printed as trial proofs in 1960 by Jacques Frélaut and officially published in an edition of 50 in 1961 by Galerie Louise Leiris.
