Pair of French Louis XVI armchairs dating from the 18th century, executed in carved and painted beechwood with molded frames, beaded borders, and finely carved foliate decoration. The arched upholstered backs are flanked by padded open arms terminating in scrolling handrests, while the seats are raised on fluted tapering legs headed by carved rosettes, embodying the refined neoclassical vocabulary of the Louis XVI period. Each chair bears the J.B. BOULARD stamp, attributed to Jean-Baptiste Boulard (1725-1789), who was received as maitre in 1755 and became one of the most distinguished menuisiers en sieges of the reign of Louis XVI. From 1777 he supplied the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, producing furniture for the French royal household. His work is recognized for its exceptional craftsmanship and restrained classical ornament, often distinguished by finely carved fluted legs and delicately modeled foliate motifs. Following his death, the workshop continued under his widow until 1808, with the business later carried on by their son, Jacques-Michel Boulard.
