PAIR OF MESOPOTAMIAN BRONZE PENANNULAR BRACELETS WITH FELINE-HEAD TERMINALS

Ca. 800 - 500 BC. A pair of bronze bracelets, each with a heavy circular hoop thickening towards the open ends and terminating in confronted feline heads. The animals are rendered schematically, with projecting muzzles, rounded ears and strongly modelled brows, and groups of transverse ribs decorate the otherwise plain hoops. Their substantial casting and antithetical animal terminals reflect a jewellery tradition established in Neo-Assyrian Mesopotamia and subsequently continued and transformed under Achaemenid rule. The closely corresponding size and execution indicate that the two were conceived as a pair. Size: 95-95mm x 105-105mm; Weight: 455g Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly H.G. collection; acquired from A. Kotllar, Paris, French art market, 1970–2006. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
