Pair of Shanxi Fahua Glazed Guardian Lions

Dimensions: H 32 cm, W 20.5 cm per lion, a pair A fine and complete matched pair of traditional Fahua glazed guardian lions, crafted in the famous ancient kilns of southern Shanxi. Made of refined terracotta with classic low-fired lead glaze, these lions feature a powerful, upright and majestic posture. The manes are finely layered and curled, facial expressions solemn and vibrant, fully representing the grand and vigorous style of northern Chinese antique glazed art. Each lion retains its original double-layer openwork carved base with delicate floral patterns, perfectly integrated and completely preserved. In ancient times, such exquisite lion ornaments were exclusively displayed in noble family halls and ancestral shrines as protective and auspicious treasures. The glaze tones are rich, deep and naturally aged, dominated by emerald green with elegant yellow and purple accents. After more than a century of natural ageing, the entire glaze surface naturally produces stunning multicolour iridescent rainbow patina, famously known as “Clam Shell Glow” in antique collection circles. This magical seven-colour radiance is entirely natural, formed through long-term molecular precipitation and oxidation over hundreds of years. It cannot be artificially replicated. In traditional Chinese culture and antique aesthetics, this natural rainbow glow is regarded as supreme auspicious aura, symbolizing blessing, health, family prosperity, continuous good fortune and spiritual protection for the household. As classic Chinese auspicious guardian beasts, a paired set of lions represents power, stability, career advancement, family inheritance, wealth protection and noble support. They are highly treasured traditional feng shui ornaments for protecting residence and gathering good fortune. Condition Report Fully original matched pair in excellent aged condition. Only one tiny minimal glaze loss on a single base corner from old minor abrasion. No cracks, no hidden lines, no modern repairs. Well-preserved for its age.
