PAIR OF SNOW SHOES, NORTH AMERICAN

PAIR OF SNOW SHOES, NORTH AMERICAN

Ca. 19th - 20th century AD. > A matched pair of wooden snowshoes of elongated teardrop form, each with a bentwood frame enclosing finely woven rawhide webbing. The central openings are fitted with simple bindings for the foot, while the tapered tails aid balance and forward movement across snow. Snowshoes of this type were essential for winter travel, distributing weight to prevent sinking into deep snow. > For similar see: Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, catalog number 5/7228. > Size: 1155mm x 385mm; Weight: 1.48kg > Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Ex.
