[EN] English Pair of Original Illuminated Book of Hours Leaves with Figural and Floral Initials – Paris, c. 1480 Object: A matching pair of fine manuscript leaves on vellum, inscribed on both sides, originating from an illuminated Book of Hours. Provenance & Dating: Paris, France, c. 1480. Dimensions: approx. 10.7 × 8.3 cm (compact and elegant format). Language & Script: Written in classical Latin (liturgical devotional texts, psalms, and daily offices) using an elegant French gothic cursiva (lettre bâtarde) in fine black and brown ink. Religious Content: The leaves contain central liturgical devotional texts and daily office psalms. These include versicles and antiphons from the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary—readily identified by classical opening lines such as the verse from Psalm 51 (Domine labia mea aperies... / "O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise")—as well as intercessory prayers and antiphons honoring the saints and the Virgin Mary (Sancta Maria ora pro nobis...). Decoration: Both leaves feature magnificent initials on burnished gold and colored grounds (blue and red) showcasing delicate interior drawings, stylized floral motifs (quatrefoils/blossoms), and sacred animal figures (including traditional symbolic imagery/animals). Condition: Expressive and decorative vellum fragments with natural age-related handling marks and patina. The gold leaf is partially rubbed in places, yet the overall appearance remains strikingly vibrant and expressive. One of the vellum leaves features a corner loss in the wide blank margin (without affecting the text). A charming duo of late-medieval manuscript art. Look to the pictures! We guarantee origin and age! #C263
