A Tokyo School bronze okimono depicting Guan Yu, the celebrated Chinese general, portrayed standing with a composed expression, a long flowing beard, and an ornate headdress. In his right hand he holds his characteristic curved-blade halberd, while in his left he carries a small pouch. The garment, rendered with great attention to the movement of the folds, is enriched with finely incised motifs. Weight: 4,858 kg Guan Yu height: 29.5 cm. The halberd is made of two separate components. Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze. ---The okimono is in very good condition with minor wear consistent with age.
