By the time he moved to New York in 1890, his name was known and respected in the art world. De Longpre's paintings of floral arrangements were primarily done in watercolor, and he had a particular fondness for roses. He made sure to include intricate details in his floral pieces, adding bees and using light strokes to bring out the delicate feel of the petals. In 1898, he built a large home in Los Angeles, and the gardens contained over 4,000 rose bushes.
