Pauline de Knip (French, 1781-1851) A hoopoe

signed 'Knip' l.r., bears inscription verso, watercolour and bodycolour on vellum, 27.5 × 30.5cm; mount 40 x 56cm, unframed, Born in Paris, Pauline Rifer de Courcelles took her name from her husband, Joseph August Knip, a Dutch landscape painter who studied under Gérard van Spaendonck. She studied under the celebrated botanical and zoological artist Jacques Barraband and built a considerable reputation for her paintings of birds. Most notably, she illustrated Coenraad Temminck's magnum opus 'Histoire Naturelle des Pigeons et des Gallinacés' and supervised the printing, colouring and publication of the spectacular plates. However, she also published copies of the work under her own name, thus taking much of the credit and marginalising the Dutch naturalist. She exhibited her drawings regularly at the Salon and became natural history painter to Empress Marie Louise, wife of Napoleon. Condition Report, Condition Report, Stuck down to the mount at the edges. Time staining and foxing are present, with tiny brown speckles along the top and bottom edges and very light discolouration. The sheet is flat and in overall good condition, with the main image and colours remaining relatively sharp. Request A Condition Report, Request A Condition Report
