In exile in New York during the Occupation period, he drew from his diary a polemical book, “The Gravediggers,” which appeared in 1943, and which is a major document on the interwar period, for which he provides a vivid tableau, served by a portrait art and attention to detail. Written to instruct future generations, never reissued since Liberation.
