A Rare and Highly Significant Gold Issue of the New World (◊) PERU. Cob 8 Escudos, 1707-L H. Lima Mint. Philip V. NGC AU-58. Fr-7; KM-38.1; Cal-2113; Tauler-227. Weight: 26.91 gms. Rare date with a very rare spelling variation: "ISPANIA". This attractive coin is boldly struck and wasn't tampered with since its days of circulation, despite an important interest in this type for jewelry. Possibly salvaged from a modern shipwreck which wouldn't be surprising for a Cob 8 Escudos. This piece retains most of its original luster and clear die striations. Double struck as usual for the type. This coin was the largest circulating gold issue of the time, crudely and hastily struck at the Lima Mint under the chief assayer, Captain Francisco Hurtado, who began the gold issues of Lima just a decade prior, with most of the earlier issues being made primarily from melted down Inka gold captured by conquistadors, and by enslaved Africans and forced indigenous laborers who mined gold under poor conditions in the Andes. The melted down gold was then cast into thin bars, cut and struck, where we get the word 'cob' from (="the end of an ingot"). They were later shipped to Spain in 'flotillas' and underwent a most dangerous voyage often tormented by both the high waves and roaring winds of hurricanes, and the infamous bloodthirsty and plundering pirates of the Caribbean. It was here that chests full of these were lost to the sea. Any 8 Escudos cob is seldom offered in Scandinavia, especially one like this, so now might be your chance to acquire one.
