70s Peterson’s meerschaum pipe with sterling silver band. The silver band bears the stamp "Peterson’s" (above) "Dublin", followed by "Sterling" (above) "Silver". On the underside there are three hallmarks: 1. Sitting Hibernia (Ireland), 2. The harp (symbol for the silver content) and 3. The small letter "e" (which indicates the year of the pipe) 1972. I suspect that the pipe was made on the Isle of Man by Laxey Pipe Ltd. from African meerschaum. It was made for export, commissioned by Peterson’s of Dublin. From the hallmarks on the silver I can see that the pipe (or at least the silver) is 1972. the Laxey Pipe Ltd. on the Isle of Man for Peterson’s in Ireland Laxey Pipe Ltd. was housed in a historic, four-story stone building on The Quay in Old Laxey (on the Isle of Man); this building has fortunately been preserved. The company specialized in the production of meerschaum pipes, using meerschaum that was mined by the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation in the Amboseli basin in Tanganyika (since 1964 part of the United Republic of Tanzania). Note: although names such as "Manx Pipes Ltd.", "Man Pipe Co." and the like are often encountered, there is no indication that any other pipe maker on the Isle of Man has ever been active besides Laxey Pipe Ltd. Dimensions (approx.): 16 cm long, 5 cm high, 2.1 cm bowl width, 4.3 cm bowl depth Condition: Good. Weight: (approx.) 54 g See photos; these are an important part of the description.
