Archbishop Gabriel Martelino Reyes first entered Seminary at the age of 13 during the time of Bishop Frederick Rooker. On 27 March 1915 he was ordained and a few months later was sent on a difficult mission to Balasan, Iloilo. By 1927 he was named Vicar General of Jaro and in 1932 Pope Pius XI appointed him to the Bishoprick of Cebu. During World War II he refused to collaborate with the Japanese and almost lost his life. After liberation he spent years rebuilding and was eventually appointed as coadjutor to Manila Archbishop Michael J. O'Doherty with right of succession on 25 August 1949. Just over a month later after the death of the Archbishop on 29 September 1949 he took over the Archiepiscopal and became the first Filipino Archbishop. He died at the age of 60 on 10 October 1952.
