PHILIPPINES. Inauguration of the Manila Railroad Silver Medal, 1891. Alfonso XIII. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Honeycutt-34. Diameter: 35 mm. By A. G. Obverse: Obverse: Infant bust of Alfonso XIII left, legend around "REINANDO D. ALFONSO XIII Y EN SU NOMBRE LA REINA REGENTE"; Reverse: Seven-line inscription "A DAGUPAN / PRIMERO DE / FILIPINAS / SIENDO GOB. GRAL / D. VALERIANO WEYLER / MARQUES DE TENERIFE / 24 MARZO 1891", legend around "SE INAUGURARON 43'800 KMS. DEL FERRO-CARRIL DE MANILA". Boldly struck with well defined design features, this seldom encountered piece offers and an expressive portrait of the young monarch. The legends are crisp and clear with hints of tone in the protected areas. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning. Overall a presentable example of this elusive issue that is certain to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. Estimate: $500 - $700.
