PHILIPPINES. Manila. Carnival Gilt Bronze Medal, 1909. UNCIRCULATED. Honeycutt-90a. Dimensions: 49 x 43 mm. By The Whitehead & Hoag Co. Obverse: Arms of Manila flanked by two woman, date "1909" below, clown above flanked by feathers, inscription around "THE PHILIPPINE CARNIVAL MANILA"; Reverse: Makers name "THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. NEWARK, N.J.". With original multi-color ribbon and suspension with "DIRECTOR". This handsome example displays a bright brassy coloration on the obverse with bold devices, while the reverse displays a mottled richer patination. The ribbon is intact, though does exhibit signs of degradation. Overall a pleasing high grade example. The 1909 Manila Carnival was the second national fair, it was organized under the insular government and featured many trade exhibits, grand parades and had dual beauty queens, Julia Guerrero Agcaoili (Queen of the Orient) and Helen Dorrington (Queen of the Occident).
