PHILIPPINES. Manila. Municipal Schools Merit and Virtue Award Silver

PHILIPPINES. Manila. Municipal Schools Merit and Virtue Award Silver Medal, ND (ca. 1859-65). Isabel II. NGC MS-62. Honeycutt-40A. Weight: 28.8 gms.; Diameter: 38 mm. Obverse: Arms of Manila, legend around "ESCUELA MUNICIPAL MANILA"; Reverse: Three-line inscription "AL MERITO / Y / A LA VIRTUD" within wreath. Nicely preserved and attractive, this handsome example displays rich mottled slated patina with bold devices and relatively smooth fields. A charming piece that is seldom encountered and as such should be considered VERY RARE and highly desirable. After the Jesuits returned to the Philippines in the 19th Century they were given the task to manage the Escuela Municipal in 1859. The circa date for this issue, 1859-65, is based on the reverse inscription "AL MERITO Y A LA VIRTUD" (In Merit and in Virtue) which stems from the Escuela Municipal's original motto when taken over by the Jesuits in 1859. Later in 1865, this institution would become the Ateneo de Manila University. Estimate: $500 - $700. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection.
