PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Chile. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. NGC VF Details--Cleaned; Countermark: VF Weak. KM-108; Basso-56; PNM#6-212; PNM#16-190; PNM#21-VIII-23; Cacho-IX-CS-005; Gil-5-4-3-III. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (by decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark: Type VI, crowned Y.II. in incuse circle. Applied to the obverse of an 1834-SANTIAGO IJ Chile Republic "Volcano" Peso (KM-82.2). This decently preserved example displays rich mottled gray patina with iridescent hues in the peripheries. The countermark is somewhat shallow due to the start of die failure in the center, an interesting diagnostic for this stamp. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now somewhat subdued. Despite its shortcomings a presentable and attractive example with a pleasing appearance and great provenance.
