PHILIPPINES. Victory at Jolo Brass Medal, 1876. Manila Mint. Alfonso XII. NGC MS-65. Honeycutt-17C. Weight: 5.7 gms.; Diameter: 23.5 mm. Obverse: Three-line inscription "29./ FEBERRO./ 1876." within wreath, legend around "A LOS VENCEDORES DE JOLO"; Reverse: Four-line inscription "LA/ CASA DE MONEDA/ DE/ MANILA". This magnificent representative exhibits crisp bold devices with smooth surfaces. A pleasing rich brassy patina with a slight iridescent sheen lends to its originality. A seldom encountered issue that is leagues better than normally seen and as such should be considered VERY RARE in this elite state of preservation. Struck to commemorate the capture the capital of the Independent Sultanate of Sulu in the southern Philippines, Jolo. Seeking to put a stop to the independence movement of the Moro people and put in place a permanent military presence in the region, the 29 February 1876 engagement included Spanish land and naval forces that attacked, bombarded and overran fortifications leading to the capture of Jolo. Estimate: $500 - $700. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection. To view all items from the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection, click
