PHIPPS (Constantin-Jean). A Voyage to the North Pole, Undertaken in 1773 by Order of the King of England. Paris, Saillant & Nyon, Pissot, 1775. In-4, marbled calfskin, decorated spine, red title label, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with 12 fold-out plates engraved on copper by Delagardette (maps, plans, views, scientific instruments, and natural history specimens). The work contains valuable observations on Spitsbergen, particularly regarding its natural resources. (Chadenat, no. 661; Sabin, no. 62574.) Interesting provenance: the title page bears the signature of Gaston de Roquemaurel (1804–1878), a naval officer and explorer from Toulouse who notably served as Dumont D’Urville’s first mate during the Astrolabe’s second circumnavigation (1837–1840). Flecks of foxing on the last page. Binding slightly worn (scratches and scuffing); worm damage on one joint with a missing section of the title label.
