Platter - antique Chinese Qing porcelain

Platter - antique Chinese Qing porcelain

Antique Chinese polychrome tazza / footed cup – Qing Dynasty – possibly 18th century Special and richly decorated antique Chinese porcelain tazza or footed dish (stem dish), entirely hand-painted in a colorful polychrome palette. The piece stylistically belongs to the Chinese famille-verte / polychrome decorative tradition that developed during the Qing Dynasty and enjoyed particular popularity during and after the Kangxi period (1662–1722). Based on form, decoration, material and visible age and production characteristics, an 18th-century origin is possible. A later production within the Qing Dynasty cannot be completely ruled out on the basis of visual assessment alone. The object is therefore intentionally conservatively attributed to the Qing Dynasty, presumably 18th–19th century. Decoration The wide bowl has a lovely scalloped and lobed rim and stands on a relatively high round foot. The interior is radially divided into separate decorative panels with stylized floral branches, leaves and bouquets. The hand-painting is executed in a lively palette mainly of iron-red/orange and various greens, supplemented with blue and pink/manganese-like accents. In the center is a round polychrome medallion, surrounded by a geometric band that shows kinship with traditional Chinese meander and leiwen patterns. Not only the interior but also the exterior and the raised foot are richly painted. The small variations in brushwork and color intensity emphasize the artisanal, fully hand-painted character. Interesting age-related features The underside is unglazed and shows a broad, roughly finished unglazed stand ring with clear age and use marks. Inside the foot there are irregularities, turn marks and small old crack lines. These may be related to the original firing process or tension in the porcelain. The green felt protectors on the stand ring are, of course, of much later date and were added to protect furniture. The absence of a government mark is not unusual for Chinese usage- and export porcelain and therefore is not a reliable indicator of a specific dating. Dating and attribution Origin: China Dynasty: Qing Dynasty Dating: presumably 18th–19th century Possible period: 18th century / Kangxi tradition Type: tazza / footed dish / stem dish Material: porcelain Decoration: hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration Style/tradition: famille verte / Chinese polychrome porcelain Mark: unmarked A more precise dating, and in particular a possible attribution to the Kangxi period (1662–1722), requires specialist physical assessment and is therefore explicitly not presented as definite with this listing. Condition Given the considerable age, the piece is in very good antique condition. The delicate scalloped rim is remarkably well preserved, with no chips or restorations observed. On the underside there are a few small old firing/strain cracks and natural production irregularities visible. Otherwise normal age- and use-related wear appropriate for handmade antique porcelain. Dimensions: H 5.9 cm x Ø 12.5 cm Weight: 224 g A particularly decorative and intriguing piece of antique Chinese Qing porcelain, whose combination of the raised foot, scalloped shape and rich hand-painted decoration makes it attractive to collectors of Chinese porcelain and Asian art. Shipped securely with smart packaging, insured, track-and-trace, and by registered mail.
