J. W. Spear & Söhne – Märchen-Quartett No. 856, illustrated by J. P. Werth, circa 1919 Object: Historical fairy-tale card game Manufacturer: J. W. Spear & Söhne, Nuremberg, Germany Model number: No. 856 Dating: Circa 1919, historical catalog reference from 1919 Material: Paper and card Technique: Printed and illustrated card parts Condition: Used, with age-related signs of wear The item is a historical fairy-tale quartet from the venerable Nuremberg game manufacturer J. W. Spear & Söhne, model No. 856. The game is documented in collector research for the year 1919 and is associated with illustrations by J. P. Werth. The specimen is housed in its old original box. Present are 24 illustrated card parts as well as 24 separate pieces with a blue geometric pattern. According to a toy expert, the two parts belong together and were intended to be glued onto each other. In its current condition they are not yet connected. The image parts depict historical fairy-tale illustrations, including motifs from “Snow White,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Hansel and Gretel.” The design and the geometric back pattern fit the appearance of early Spear card games. The game shows age-related signs of wear. The card parts are not glued. The exact original production method and the question whether this specific assembly represents a special variant have not yet been clarified. None of the cards is folded in any way, except for a back piece that is unprinted on the front side. Item contents: Original box as well as the box for sliding cards where the cards are stored, and the available 24 image parts as well as 24 parts with blue back pattern, as shown in the photos.
