Plinius [Folio 34 cm

DESCRIPTION: I present to you a PRECIOUS AND IMPONENT LARGE-FORMAT EDITION on folio 34x23 cm and weighing 4 kg of the ''HISTOIRE DU MONDE (HISTORIAE MUNDI LIBRI XXXVII)'', the famous NATURAL HISTORY OF THE WORLD BY PLINY THE ELDER (23 C.E. – 79 C.E), eminent Roman writer, scientist, naturalist, and soldier, who carried out studies and investigations into natural phenomena, ethnography and geography. Our copy is COMPLETE and contains all XXXVII books that make up the work. The author begins his work by presenting notions about the world, the Earth, the Sun, the planets and the most notable properties of the elements. From there he moves on to the geographic description of the parts of the Earth known to the ancients. After Geography, Pliny deals with the natural history of man, his anthropology and psychology. He then goes on to study the zoology of land animals, fish, insects and birds. He continues with botany, in which the author also provides much information about agriculture and crafts, such as wine and oil production, cereal cultivation and various industrial applications. He was thus interested in papyrus manufacture (XIII) and purple dyes (IX). He also deals with natural medicines obtained from plants. After the botany section, he returns to the animals to enumerate the medicines and natural remedies they provide. Finally, Pliny treats minerals, describing their extraction processes and applications. He also discusses painting and sculpture among the Ancients. Pliny also addresses in his work MONSTERS AND MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES, fabulous beings that were believed to truly exist. In medieval treatises and sculptures and in the Renaissance, there are representations and interpretations of some of the fantastic creatures that Pliny describes in his work (cyclopes, beings who feed on the perfume of flowers and fruits, women who give birth to elephants or snakes, women who turn into men, monstrous children at birth, monsters such as basilisks, dragons, Mentĭcoras, Blemias, Sphinxes, etc). Pliny’s monsters populated European legends for centuries. Some of them have reached our days and continue to be depicted, such as the phoenix or the basilisk, although there is no longer anyone who believes they exist in truth. Pliny the Elder’s work is so singular that copies as old as this are always sought after, valued, and difficult to obtain at a reasonable price. PLINY’S NATURAL HISTORY COMPLETE. DO NOT MISS IT. PUBLICATION YEAR: Paris, 1608 (418 years old) LANGUAGE: French SIZE AND PAGINATION: Dimensions: Folio, 34 x 22.5 cm, 2 volumes bound together in one volume. Thickness: 11 cm. Pagination: 2 volumes.
