POLICHINELLE — THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR OF 1870 MONTBARD. POLICHINELLE. Weekly satirical journal. Paris, Polichinelle, 1870. A double-sided printed sheet, illustrated with two large, colored satirical drawings signed by Montbard, relating to Franco-Prussian tensions and the War of 1870. On the front: Polichinelle. Weekly satirical journal, Year 1870, No. 6, Thursday, July 21, 1870. Large illustration titled “Stop Right There! No More Madness.” ” A figure leaning over a map showing France and Prussia is loomed over by Death, a massive draped skeleton brandishing his scythe. This image appeared just two days after France’s declaration of war on Prussia, on July 19, 1870. On the reverse: A terrible gambler from Nuremberg. A caricature depicting a Prussian soldier treated like a puppet or a mechanical toy, standing before a poster reading “Prince Hohenzollern.” Also noted are the phrases “Don’t do anything without Daddy” and “Bismarck.” The caption summarizes the threat of the conflict with remarkable foresight: “To think that this little blackbird is going to be the reason thousands of good people will be slaughtering each other!” ” A very interesting satirical print from the early days of the Franco-Prussian War, both sides of which document both the diplomatic origins of the conflict—notably the Hohenzollern candidacy—and the immediate condemnation of the war. Condition: yellowed sheet; old creases, small tears, and marginal damage; a few stains and soiling; print and colors well preserved.
