Scientific name: Polinices aurantius (Röding, 1798) – belongs to the family of moon snails (Naticidae); in the German-speaking world known as the Golden Moon Snail, Orange-navel Snail, or Fleming Moon Snail. Origin & localities: Central Philippines; this exquisite piece comes from the clean sandy and coral reef areas around Cebu Island, which are worldwide known for color-rich marine specimens. Habitat: Pure sandy bottoms in the intertidal zone down to shallow reefs at about 5 to 20 meters depth. As a predatory snail, the creature actively combs the seabed in search of other shells and gastropods. Size & condition: 40 mm – a remarkable size well above average for this species (while most pieces on the market measure around 20–30 mm, a 40 mm specimen already ranks among the great collector highlights). Condition GEM (GEM Museum Quality: Completely undamaged, rounded outer rim, smooth and highly glossy saffron- to golden-orange shell with no dull spots, white umbilical region, and perfect callus).
