The King of the Lounges: Imposing 4-Seater Chester Sofa – Design Renzo Frau (1912) – Original Production by Poltrona Frau 2009 We present at auction a masterpiece of rare majesty and collectible allure: the legendary Chester sofa in its rare and imposing 4-seater version (256 cm wide). Conceptualized by Renzo Frau in 1912 and inspired by the elegant atmosphere of Edwardian-era English clubs, the Chester is the absolute emblem of high-end collecting and luxury at authorial level worldwide. A work of art in high-end upholstery whose new value today exceeds €22,000. Design and History: The Perfection of Hand-Mmade Capitonné The Chester represents the sublime synthesis between tradition and the sartorial elegance of Made in Italy: Sartorial Historical Mastery: The model’s unmistakable signature is the complex and sumptuous capitonné work, carried out entirely by hand by master upholsterers on the armrests and backrest. Every fold, every button pulled by hand tells the story of a centuries-old manual craft that requires dozens of hours of work. Sculptural Proportions: Compared to British models, Renzo Frau knew how to recalibrate the sofa’s geometries, introducing soft, welcoming, harmonious proportions. The characteristic wrinkling of the arms with the typical sartorial pleats transforms the seating into a true architecture for the living area. Preservation and Era Patina: The Splendor of the Author’s “Used” Condition This exemplar is not simply used furniture, but a piece of exceptional quality enriched by a noble and magnetic patina that only time and top-quality leather can bestow: Frau leather in chocolate color: The coating in premium natural leather in the warm, deep shade of dark brown is in superb condition. The leather surface is incredibly soft, elastic, and enveloping. The minimal, physiological, and beautiful signs of wear give the sofa that lived, aristocratic, authentic charm that even a new piece cannot replicate. Impeccable Structure and Comfort: The engineered core in seasoned beech is solid, robust, and free of defects. The suspension (obtained with hand-tied steel springs on jute webbing) and the fillings maintain perfect elastic response, ensuring the same poise and regal comfort as the first day. Preservation and Authenticity Treatment: The sofa has been entirely cleaned, sanitized, and nourished with professional products specifically to preserve the leather’s silkiness. Authenticity is irrefutably certified both by the original metal Poltrona Frau tag with the serial number placed under the base and by the fire-mark directly impressed on the leather. Dimensions Width: 256 cm Depth: 112 cm Height: 70 cm Seat height: 41 cm The Manufacturer: Poltrona Frau Founded in Turin in 1912 by Renzo Frau and with its historic headquarters in Tolentino, Poltrona Frau is the worldwide symbol of excellence and luxury in Italian leatherware. With a history studded with success, awards (including the Compasso d’Oro) and prestigious collaborations spanning from great architectural masters to high-end setups for Ferrari, Maserati, and major international institutions, the maison represents the pinnacle for anyone seeking timeless artisanal perfection.
