After completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, his teacher for three years was Michele Gordigiani. His artistic career began with the painting "La politica in canonica", which earned him a silver medal at the Rovigo Exhibition of 1879. In 1881, Massani won the top prize at the Genoa Exhibition thanks to the work "Un brindisi al frate", in which he depicted more than 36 figures. Among his other important works are "The Design Lesson", owned by Goupil Gallery, "I vecchi celibi" (the old bachelors), "Una partita a carte" (A game of cards), "Il concerto" (The concert), "In cantina" (In the cellar), and "Il saluto al gobbo" (The greeting to the hunchback). Massani was also the author of portraits as famous as they were important, including those of King Vittorio Emanuele and the Countess of Mirafiore. The Italian painter was also the author of many works depicting scenes of public life, as in the painting with tambourines, in which he portrayed vivid public scenes, including "Al teatro delle Marionette" (At the Puppets Theater), "Al circo equestre" (At the Equestrian Circus), "Il giocoliere" (The Juggler), and "Momento allegro" (A Cheerful Moment). In 1889, Massani participated in the Munich Exhibition, where he exhibited the painting "Circo Equestre". During his career, Massani was named honorary professor of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, and in 1887 he was awarded the Cross of the Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy. His art was primarily focused on genre painting, with scenes often depicted in costume and in satirical poses.
