PONCINS (Gontran de) — ESKIMOS. EXPLORATORY EXPEDITION TO TH - Lot 234

PONCINS (Gontran de) — ESKIMOS. EXPLORATORY EXPEDITION TO THE NORTH MAGNETIC POLE (1938–1939) PONCINS (Gontran de). Eskimos. Text and photographs by Gontran de Poncins. Exploratory Expedition to the North Magnetic Pole (1938–1939). Paris, Arts et Métiers Graphiques, [circa 1947]. Quarto, paperback, illustrated photographic cover in black and blue. Numerous black-and-white photographs by Gontran de Poncins, some full-page. An important photographic and ethnographic work resulting from the author’s extended stay in the Canadian Arctic in 1938–1939. Poncins lived among the Inuit people and provided firsthand documentation of their movements, hunting, dwellings, clothing, and daily life in the Far North. The book is particularly interesting for the quality of its photographic layout—characteristic of Arts et Métiers Graphiques publications—and for the documentary significance of Poncins’ photographs. It serves as the visual counterpart to the Arctic work that established the explorer’s reputation. Condition: good condition for its age. Cover is slightly scuffed and soiled, with minor wear on the corners and spine; a few creases and marginal marks. Interior is generally clean, with a few visible creases on the pages. A well-preserved copy given the fragility of the paperback edition.
