Post-medieval - Very rare majolica plate from the high period - Netherlands

Quite a rare example of Dutch maiolica dish dating from the early 17th century. This early 17th-century ceramic was found during archaeological research. The plate has a very beautiful ornamental decoration, featuring a female bust. Northern Netherlands, probably manufactured in the city of Rotterdam. Dutch maiolica is one of the rarest ceramics known, especially when found in a complete condition. Dutch maiolica is extremely rare to find complete; most often, pieces are missing. This is because almost all pieces come from excavations. It is estimated that only 200 pieces have been handed down through the centuries, most of which are in museum collections or foundations. In addition to the rarity of Dutch maiolica, it also has a historical particularity: it marks a new chapter in people’s lives and a blending of cultures. Maolica has something magical and a special allure that astonishes. It must have been like this for people in the first half of the 16th century, when this luxury product was first introduced. This product was exotic, innovative, and decorated with vivid and bright colors on a tin-glazed background, in contrast to the lead-glazed brown, yellow, and green ceramics that were common. Dutch maiolica was influenced by many cultures. The main influences were Hispano-Islamic culture and the Italian Renaissance. Later, it was also influenced by Chinese porcelain imports. This example still shows influences of the Italian Renaissance. The border decoration is copied from Italian style. But the main decoration is characteristic of Dutch maiolicas. In this period (1620-1640), we see scenes of daily life. Decorations of people, landscapes, fruits, animals, birds, and flowers. In this case, a figure decoration. A wonderful example of Dutch decorative art from the late Renaissance period. The plate has been professionally restored. Maiolicas of this era have almost always been restored to some extent. Beautifully bright colors. Time has no influence on maiolica, so it still looks fresh after 400 years. The influence is clearly visible from Italy and Flanders.
