All auctions / Vehicles / Print - Campbell-Railton Blue Bird - 1996
Beautiful offset art reproduction of the famous painting "Bluebird at Bonneville" by Scottish artist Jack Vettriano, originally painted in 1995. The work captures the cinematic and nostalgic atmosphere typical of the author, celebrating the historic land speed record set by Sir Malcolm Campbell in the Bonneville Salt Flats desert in 1935 aboard the car named "Bluebird". The print features the artist’s name centered at the bottom of the white margin. Produced on thick high-quality paper, with excellent color rendering of the deep blue of the car and the sky in contrast with the white of the ground. The item ships unframed, rolled in a rigid protective cardboard tube to ensure perfect integrity during transit. Here are the main details and the story behind this work of art: The story and the context Inspiration: The painting celebrates the exploits of British racing driver Sir Malcolm Campbell. On September 3, 1935, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, Campbell became the first man to break the historic 300 mph barrier (about 482 km/h) aboard his legendary record car, aptly named "Bluebird". The commission: The work is part of a series of seven paintings commissioned from Vettriano by designer Sir Terence Conran to decorate his exclusive Bluebird Club in London, housed in an Art Deco building that in the 1920s had been the Bluebird Motor Company’s workshop. Auction value: The original canvas version reached stellar valuations: in 2007 it was sold at auction for over £600,000, becoming one of the most expensive and iconic paintings in Vettriano’s career. Style and composition: The painting is characterized by Vettriano’s signature figurative, nostalgic, and strongly cinematic style: Suspended atmosphere: The car is not shown in full flight, but in a static moment of waiting and preparation. Mechanics and race officials in vintage white outfits surround the car beneath a clear, motionless sky, creating a strong sense of silence and concentration before the great record. Color contrast: The intense blue of the bodywork and the sky contrasts sharply with the blinding white of the salt ground, giving the composition a geometrical and extremely elegant appearance.
