Frankreich, Ende 19. Jahrhundert. | Magnificent Empire Style Centrepiece with Sphinx Handles France, late 19th century. Cast, chased, patinated and fire-gilded bronze. The impressive vase-shaped body rises from a square, stepped marble base fitted with applied lion-mask handles. Richly decorated in relief throughout, the body features winged female masks framed by swags of laurel and medallions with Classical profile portraits inspired by Antiquity. The high, fluted side handles are surmounted by seated sphinxes, while the flared rim is embellished with a finely chased palmette frieze. Height: approx. 46 cm. Good overall condition with minor age-related wear; the fire gilding is lightly rubbed in places. The composition and iconography of this vase represent an outstanding example of the late 19th-century Historicist revival of the Empire style, echoing the monumental decorative vocabulary of the Napoleonic period (c. 1810). The combination of deep black patination and fire-gilded ornament is characteristic of this later revival, while the exceptional quality of the chasing demonstrates the admiration for the refined decorative arts produced during the reign of Napoleon I.
