About the print These two pages come from Hokkei manga, a sketchbook by Totoya Hokkei published by Eirakuya Tōshirō of Nagoya. The title follows the Hokusai manga, the famous series of sketchbooks by Hokkei's teacher, which Eirakuya also published. Like his master's books, Hokkei's manga is a collection of drawings of everyday life, people and things, made as a model book for artists and as entertainment for readers. Hokkei was one of Hokusai's most accomplished pupils. He was best known for his finely printed surimono made for the kyōka poetry circles of Edo, and also worked widely as a book illustrator. Copies of Hokkei manga are held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Smithsonian Libraries.
