Very rare illustrated edition with 9 engravings (2 per book) by François Chauveau (1613 – 1676) of this 17th-century moral and literary work that seeks to demonstrate, through a succession of portraits and comparisons, that women can display virtues as remarkable as those traditionally attributed to male heroes. Du Bosc’s undertaking rests on a particularly characteristic comparative structure of moral literature of his time, since he parallels feminine and masculine figures in order to examine their qualities, their actions and their merits, then adds to each comparison reflections intended to draw a moral lesson from the example presented. The work thus fits into an ancient tradition of exemplary biographies, historical portraits and moral treatises where figures from the past serve as models of conduct, but it gives it an original orientation by placing women in the foreground and by seeking to make their capacity to exercise all kinds of virtues recognized. Volume 2 consisting of books V to IX: Porcia & Brutus (V); Judith & David (VI); Tanaquil & Tarquin (VII); Susanna & Joseph (VIII); Lucretia & Cato (IX).
